General Samuel McClellan House
South Woodstock, CT
General McClellan was a Revolutionary War general. He raised horses on the property for Washington's army. He lead a regiment from Woodstock at the Battle of Bunker Hill. Samuel McClellan was also the grandfather of George B McClellan, the Civil War General that went out of favor with Linclon. Among other history of the house, is the fact that Wintrop Chandler, famous American artist, lived in the home. He was McClellan's nephew. There is an over-mantel painting done by him, applied directly to the mortar.
The house is now an Antique Shop.

Born in 1745, Oliver Ellsworth was one of the framers of the United States Constitution. Connecticut's first Senator, and author of the Judiciary Act, which forms the basis of our present day federal judicial system.
Ellsworth and his wife, Abigail Wolcott, lived at the Homestead until his death in 1807. While living at the Homestead, Ellsworth was visited by President George Washington in 1789, and by President John Adams in 1799.

This Georgian-style mansion was built, circa 1754, for Dr. Joshua Babcock. He was Westerly's first physician,
first postmaster, Chief Justice of Rhode Island and a member of the General Assembly. The house was Westerly's
first post office and later the home of Orlando Smith, discoverer of Westerly granite in 1846.

Mansard Style Architecture is treated in the website "Second Empire Mansard".
